On a new build, the retaining wall isn't just a finishing touch - it's part of what makes the whole site work. Grade management, drainage, keeping soil where it belongs while other trades are still on site. Get that wrong and you're creating problems for every step that comes after.

Here's what we were working with on this Bozeman job - a sloped lot that needed a solid block wall to separate grade levels and set the yard up for whatever comes next. The wall runs the width of the backyard area, stepped into the grade with a clean gravel drainage bed packed along the base. That detail matters a lot more than most people realize. Without proper drainage behind the wall, hydrostatic pressure builds up and walls fail - sometimes fast, sometimes slow, but they fail.

We used segmental concrete block for this one. It's a workhorse material. Durable, structured, and it locks together in a way that handles lateral soil pressure well over time. You can see the coursing is tight and level across the full run, which doesn't happen by accident on raw, uneven ground. A skid steer helped us move material efficiently and keep the site organized while the build was still actively going on around us.

That's one thing about new construction sitework - you're not working in a vacuum. There are other crews, tight timelines, and a general contractor counting on you to hold up your end so the next phase can start. We take that seriously. Our job was to get the wall in right and keep things moving, and that's exactly what we did.

A retaining wall built during the construction phase - not as an afterthought - gives the whole lot a stronger foundation to build from. If you've got a sloped lot or a new build that needs sitework done right, this is the kind of work we do every day in the Bozeman area.
