This yard needed more than just a fence. The grade change along the property line was working against the homeowner - without proper structure holding things in place, soil movement and erosion were only going to get worse over time. A retaining wall paired with a fence was the right call.
We built a solid block retaining wall to handle the grade, then topped it with a horizontal-slat cedar fence that runs the full length of the yard. The two work together as a single system. The wall does the heavy lifting below grade, and the fence handles privacy and security above it. That combination is a lot more functional than a fence planted straight into sloped ground.
The block we used has that clean, stacked-stone look that holds up well in Bozeman's climate. Freeze-thaw cycles can be brutal on hardscaping that wasn't built right, so material selection and proper base prep matter a lot here. The horizontal cedar boards give the fence a modern feel that fits the newer home construction in the area.
What we end up with is a yard that has real definition. There's a clear boundary, the lawn has a clean edge to work against, and the whole side of the property looks intentional. Good hardscaping and landscaping should pull double duty - it has to look sharp and actually solve a problem.
If you've got a sloped yard, a property boundary that needs structure, or just want something more finished than a basic fence line, this kind of combined approach is worth a serious look.
